Most men who have these types of surgeries will have some difficulty with erections (called erectile dysfunction or ED). Some men will be able to have erections firm enough for penetration, but probably not as firm as they were before. Others may not be able to get erections. There are many different treatments for ED that can help many men get their erections back. (See Managing Male Sexual Problems Related to Cancer to learn more.)

Erectile dysfunction is a common condition and its frequency increases with age. Whilst for some men it may only occur occasionally, being related to fatigue, stress or alcohol intake, for others, it can occur more frequently. The male erection is the culmination of two aspects of sexual function – a reflex aspect, controlled by the nerves in the body, and a psychogenic aspect, which is the result of emotional or erotic stimuli, and involving the brain’s limbic system (which controls emotions and feelings).

One rough-and-ready way of working out whether your ED has a physical cause is to see whether there any circumstances in which you get an erection. If you can produce one when masturbating but not with a partner, wake up with an erection, or have erections during the night, then there's a good chance that your ED has psychological causes. How can I prevent it? Have a healthy lifestyle. Quitting smoking and drinking alcohol in moderation will help. Regular aerobic exercise and a low-fat diet will also reduce the risks of atherosclerosis. If you have diabetes, ensure it's properly controlled. Should I see a doctor?
Kegels exercises can be helpful in maintaining the blood flow and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic- region thus enabling a normal erection.
